Overview
In many organizations today, Lotus Notes has become a victim of its own success. Notes hit the market as an departmental package, even if it didn’t get used that way in the majority of companies. The very ease and accessibility of Notes development have enabled “power users” outside the IT department to create significant applications that have proliferated throughout these businesses. Of course, profit-center managers and users are happy: they get the applications they want without paying for (or waiting for) IT resources. But this proliferation is dangerous.

IT Governance specifies decision making authority and accountability to encourage desirable behaviors in the use of IT. I know that definition is probably not too helpful. Another way to think about IT Governance is that successful IT governance enables IT to deliver the “Big 4” IT objectives:

▪ Compliance with company policies and external regulation
▪ Alignment with the business – making sure your customers are receiving value for the applications you provide
▪ Risks Managed to within acceptable and known limits
▪ Efficient and cost-effective services – do more faster and easier
